Historic American Beach
Her wardrobe was kaleidoscopic. Her hair was longer than seven feet. There was only one “Beach Lady” on the island, and her name was MaVynee Betsch. She was born in 1935, the same year her millionaire great-grandfather, Abraham Lincoln Lewis, founded American Beach. For African-Americans living in an era when beaches were for “whites only,” this glorious two hundred acres of quartz sand was the place – the only place – to be. MaVynee grew up here during its heyday of the 40’s and 50’s. People came from all over the South to play in the ocean, dine in the restaurants, and pack the clubs to watch musicians like Ray Charles and Cab Calloway perform.

It's paradise, fell asleep to the sound of the waves, woke up to the most beautiful sunrises I've ever seen. We have travelled all over the U.S. I feel like I'm giving away a big secret, telling people about this place. It is so quiet and peaceful. If you want action in the evening I'd suggest leaving the property and going to the Palace on Fernandina Beach. The place makes you feel like home. Nicest people we've ever met. Great bands everynight. We will be back for years to come....

I loved Amealia Island. I grew up enjoying Cape Cod, but it became too commercial and Martha's Vineyard got too uppity. Amealia Island is what I miss.. small, great beaches, friendly people, a really funky historic town and great beaches.

My favorite place in Florida! If you are looking for Mayberry with a beach, this is your place. You will find it a quaint beach town with a charming historic district. From a beautiful sunrise north of main beach to walking thru locally owned shops on historic Centre St. And make sure to take in an incredible sunset at the City Marina at the end of Centre St. World class fishing, golf, dinning and sun bathing on quiet beaches....Amelia Island has it all!

Amelia Island is a wonderful place - full of sweet little shops unlike the retail chains you get in every mall. You can safely stroll around, browse amongst antique stores, art galleries and whimsical places that have a little bit of everything. Lodging is not a problem - there are a great many wonderful inns and bed & breakfasts that reflect the local history and charm.

We had a great time! My husband and I honeymooned at the Ritz Carlton Amelia Island. The service was excellent, the hotel beautiful...we had a great time. During the day we lounged by the pool or oceanside, and then took in the amazing views of the sunset from our balcony. At night we drove to Fernandina Beach and enjoyed the local nightlife. What a relaxing, wonderful trip.

Royal Amelia Golf Links - Play a "must" course! This is a "must play" for anyone who loves the game. Fantastic shape with the best greens we played in North Florida...every hole is different and you will remember a good number of the holes when you are through playing this "gem". Have you ever finished playing a course and immediately wanted to go play again...this is that kind of track!! Do not miss this one if you are in North Florida.

Kayak Amelia - Highlight of Weekend! Great way to see the other side of Amelia. Spent half a day with Ray, the owner, out in the marshes. Great history lesson and exposure to unique perspectives on island. Paddled out to a plantation. Great way to start the day. Anyone can do this- they are very helpful.

Golf at Summer Beach
The course at The Golf Club of Amelia Island is rich in natural wonders-and in pure golfing pleasure. Designed by PGA-TOUR Veterans Mark McCumber and Gene Littler, this 18-hole course exemplifies the essence of the game of golf. With challenges to put you to the test, it remains for-giving enough to remind you that golf is, after all, supposed to be fun. Nestled along the shores of the ocean, the course, when first opened, was nominated as the best new course of the year. Meticulously maintained, it winds its way through palm, pine and oak trees, offering spectacular views of Amelia Island's many natural treasures. It is simply an unforgettable golfing experience.
